split

I met one of my old classmates in Friendster and while we were chatting about the past, I've realised that some of my classmates in high school perceived me as a quiet person. However, I am quite talkative whenever I am among my siblings. Perhaps, the situation or environment has influenced on how I am interacting with people.

I am extremely quiet and shy whenever I'm among strangers and I take some time to overcome my shyness. The point when I started to gain a bit confidence in breaking the uncomfortable silence was when I becoming a medical student. This requires me to talk to strangers a lot more than in the past. I used to stutter and speak differently from my own thought process. Many people have misunderstood me and it requires reasonable amount of effort on my part, to correct the situation. This is also prevent me from giving random comment at other people's blog just in case I might hurt someone's feeling. To overcome this, I try to talk slowly and observed how people converse with each other.

One of the impetus for me to be more talkative with strangers is exam (OSCE). OSCE assess how well a medical student talking with a patient and whether they are able to diagnose the disease.

It is not easy to talk comfortably with a stranger that you have never met before. Added that with the pressure of exam, and you need to talk with the patient in less than 10 minutes. You need to ask appropriate questions and try to diagnose the disease. This is a hurdle requirement and you need to pass this exam one way or another.

Now, if you meet me in the real life and see me of not greeting you, it might be that I am still unable to overcome my shyness. Yet I will be a totally different person with my family. I might have a split personality, I think.

If you say so, then we can say that most people have a split personality too. Why? Because surely we will treat different people differently in a way or another.

Would you treat your siblings equally the same as you treat your parents? Of course it should be a big no-no for that, right?

When it comes to treating people, various aspects absolutely will be taken into consideration i.e. status, interest, environment etc., right?

I believe that we can change innate personality; from introvert into extrovert or vice versa depending on situation - because it worked for me! :)

Don't let your innocence hold you back because it is IMPOSSIBLE to please everyone, ok?

So, it's all up to us, all we need is practise. 'Practise makes perfect', isn't it?

All the best for you =)

hayad, tak juga. ramai doktor yang peramah dan rajin bercakap :). kalau tak nanti, pesakit cakap doktor sombong pula ;)

tawel, yes it is true that at KMB, I'm still quiet although I have improved a bit during those period.

striker, thanks for the comment. it might be true that we have different attitude depending on who we interact with.

I need to improve myself :)

days go by, Insya Allah 1 day u'll be able to overcome ur shyness. n actly its not wrong to be at the level except if it disturbs u to reach ur best performance, then u have to change a bit.

hafiz,

ko ni quiet sebab shy ke? pada pendapat aku, ko memang pun quiet, tapi tak shy, sebab selalunya nampak muka confident je. orang yang shy biasanya lack of eye contact.

saja nak kongsi tip... smile a lot when meeting people :) they will somehow think you are warm and approachable...okla kan?

sarah, Insha-Allah I will be more talkative in the future.

chem, thanks for the tip. I will smile a lot now :)

Pemalu itu tandanya sopan. It could be contributed by our culture and tradition.I selalu dengar orang Melayu ni pemalu, so it is a common personality among Malaysians. But excessively shy could be a problem for getting urself into a relationship. It could be one of differential diagnosis for u still being single. :)

memang susah la kalau jumpa doktor muka tak friendly. nak share problem pun kurang semangat. but i'm sure that is also a big part that they're training in uni kan?

communication skills is part of our training and part of our assessment. Don't worry, i think most of medical students here will be friendly doctors in the future.

tak perlu jadi talkative...biar cakap sesuatu yang bermanfaat dan memberi kesan pada jiwa yang mendengar...
jadi diri sendiri tu kan lebih baik. wallahualam...
