Analysing blog visitors

Since I'm taking a break from my study, let me show you the statistics of this blog. I'm using Google Analytics to analyse all the traffics to the blog.

Most of the traffic that comes to this blog is from search engine. Between January to April 2008, 58.45% of the blog visitors come from search engine whereas within the same period last year, only 39.35% visitors could be attributed to the search engine. I guess this blog contain more keywords that they are looking for.

Top 15 keywords [January - April 2008]
* The number in the brackets represent the number of visits.
  1. e-novel malay [60]
  2. kembara di bumi Melbourne [52]
  3. hafiz238 [52]
  4. ladybug layouts [20]
  5. candid syndrome [19]
  6. e-novel malay Malaysia [13]
  7. aurat wanita [9]
  8. kelebihan al-mathurat [9]
  9. ladybug layout [9]
  10. Malay e-novel [9]
  11. medical abbreviation [7]
  12. hafiz blog [6]
  13. Kembara [6]
  14. kelebihan al-mathurat [5]
  15. kelebihan mathurat [5]

Top 15 pages [January - April 2008]
  1. Kembara di bumi Melbourne [1284]
  2. Medical abbreviations [222]
  3. Diencephalon [122]
  4. January 2005 [107]
  5. Interpreting Electrocardiogram [91]
  6. another online novel [90]
  7. Ladybug (Red theme) [83]
  8. broken heart syndrome [83]
  9. Ladybug [72]
  10. July 2005 [70]
  11. How to migrate from old classic blogger template to new Blogger layout [62]
  12. 100 tahun meneroka sejarah [58]
  13. March 2007 [54]
  14. Few Blogger hacks [52]
  15. Google Reader shared item hacks [52]

The conclusion that I could gather from this statistic is that I should be writing more on medicine and blogger layout if I would like to attract more traffic from the search engine.

Top 10 Commentator

I've seen several blogs hosted at blogspot who are using this widget. I'm a bit reluctant to add the widget since it may increase the loading time of this blog. I might add it later once I redesigned the entire blog layout.

I've been using Haloscan previously. This widget is based on Blogger own comment system and therefore, the total comments may not reflect the actual number of comments in this blog. I have installed it at one of my test blogs and here is the top 10 commentators in this blog.
  1. Hayad [30]
  2. Chem [27]
  3. Sarah [26]
  4. Moshimoshi [23]
  5. Aria Ayumi [21]
  6. Minci [15]
  7. Ummu Layth [14]
  8. Arsaili [13]
  9. Kasyah [11]
  10. Mosh [11] --> The widget is based on the username put in the comment section. Mosh and Moshimoshi are the same person. So, the actual comment is 37 :)

Number of posts

It seems that the number of posts in this blog has been decreasing. I guess this can be contributed to the number of hours I spend for revision. Clinical years is quite busy and sometimes the consultants expect you to know some stuff that you've never learned before. You have to study on your own and should not expect the consultants to teach you. Prior to the clinical years, you can always depend on the lecture notes given by the lecturer and now, there is even less lectures. You have to be independent and organised your own timetable and notes.

The conclusion from this chart is that I should write more often in this blog :)

heavy website

How fast your website can load? It is an important question whenever I design my blog layout. Not many people have fast internet connection and many people tend to discard any website that is slow to load.

There are several things that will slow down the loading time of websites. Having too many advertisements, images and Flash objects will hinder the loading time of any websites. Putting complicated JavaScript might cause internet browser such as Internet Explorer and Firefox to stall or crash.

One of the tools that I used to check my blog layout is Pingdom Tools. It gives detail analysis of what is being downloaded whenever someone is visiting this blog.

Here is the snapshot of the analysis. The full report is here.

The current layout for my blog at the moment is a bit heavy since it has few JavaScript and various small images. If I have time, I might redesign the entire layout to make it simpler than the current design.

nice numbers

It took almost 4 years to reach 20202 visits to this blog and the number of posts have been spiralling down since 2006. The decreasing number of posts reflects that I might be too busy with study or having writer's block or holiday :)

Sometimes, it can be interesting to see how people find out about this blog. I use Google Analytics to analyse the traffic to this site and 40% of the visitors come from search engine.

  5. kerja sebagai fruit picker
  6. ladybug layout
  7. peperiksaan blogspot
  8. raya di australia
  9. raya di melbourne
  10. erti kemerdekaan
There are several patterns that can be observed from this data.

Some of the searches were seasonal and this highlights the important of having post which is related to certain important season. In September, keywords related to independence were among the top keywords and in October, keywords related to Eidul fitri were linked to this blog. The summer holiday in Australia start in November and hence the reason of searching about fruit picker ;).

Another pattern is writing about blogspot layout/template will attract traffic at any time. I think there are many people who are looking to modify their blogspot layout. I never know that there are many people who are looking for ladybug layout. This is quite a surprise for me.

Another surprise is to see that an old blog post is coming up in one of the searches. E-novel malay is referring to this entry which was written in 2004.

If you are keen in analysing the web traffic, you will be able to learn a lot and this information will be useful in the future. By analysing which keywords land your site in the search engine, you are able to plan your writing and design an effective marketing strategy.

However, I am not planning of using this blog to get additional income. This blog will stay as a personal blog and occasionally I will write and talk about blogspot layouts/templates. Part of my hobby is to design website. At least, I will be able to put my knowledge on CSS into practice.

tracking visitors in Google Analytics

I have another blog at efx2.com. That blog is primarily used for commenting at efx2 blogs. I have put Google Analytics code in the blog since last year and I am able to detect who is visiting the blog.

There are a lot of features in this application. I will show you how to combine several features together. First, click marketing optimization under All reports. Then click visitor segment performace and after that, please click on referring source.

Google Analytics will show you how the visitors found the website either through search engine, links from another website or direct link from the computer. The picture above shows my statistics on the blog at efx2.com.

Click on the double arrow that pointing upwards on any of the source. For example, I have clicked on the double arrow next to (direct)[(none)]. A box (I don't know the appropriate term for this one though) will appear next to the double arrow. Click on cross segment performance. Another box will appear and this will list several options for you to combine several features. If you would like to know which countries the visitors came from, click country and in my case, I will click city.

After that, a new page will reload and shows you the appropriate statistic. In my case, between 29th March 2007 and 4th April 2007, there were 12 direct visits from North Clayton, 4 visits from Melbourne, 2 from Dingley and 1 from Camberwell B).
You can also adjust the date range if you want to find out specific visitors on each day. Just click the calendar under the date range.

This post was inspired after reading this entry :)

p/s: Wrote this entry after taking a break from analysing data for my thesis ;)

keywords

It is common for people to use search engine to search for info. Most of the new visitors to this blog arrived via google and yahoo. It is interesting to see what kind of keywords they search for. For the uninitiated, I am using Google Analytics to analyse all the web traffic data. The top keyword of this week is surprisingly 'Siti Fatimah Mukhtar'. I think this refer to the post I wrote here.

There were 16 searches about her. It is strange since in the post, the only word about her name was in the news snippet I pasted from NST.

Just to let you know, the top four keywords in 2006 were 'kembara di bumi melbourne', 'tunku kurshiah college', 'saladin animation malaysia' and 'xifu algebra'. Compare this with the top four keywords in this year (up until today); 'kembara di bumi melbourne', 'xifu and the algebra', 'cerpen faisal tehrani' and 'aliya murshida fotopages'.

statistics

Google Analytics tell me that most of the blog visitors used broadband and few used dial-up. Perhaps in the future, I need to reduce the amount of images and graphics in the blog for the dial-up users.

In term of browser, most visitors used Firefox but there is still large proportion who used IE6.

One aspect of Google Analytics is that you can see cross-segment performance. For example, I would like to see which browser is frequently used according to countries. In Malaysia, more than 50% of the visitors used IE6.
In comparison to Australian visitors, most of them used Firefox. This is certainly interesting for me to ponder. What causes this discrepancy?
The last picture shows the summary of this blog :)

random

Looking back at this map, it seems my blog visitors are rather spread out. Probably most people found this blog accidentally. There are few big dots at North America and Europe. Australia and New Zealand as expected :)

4444

That is the current number of real view of this blog. 4444th visitor have this IP address as bigpond.net.au. I knew who is the visitor but won't reveal the identity here :)

Most of the visitor of this blog are my friends and some of them most probably stumbled accidentally via surfing. It is not surprising to me if there were accidental visit from Taiwan, Korea or even some Southern American countries.

Ok. Enough said.

paradigmshift: 1 year

After one year existing on the virtual world, today is the first anniversary of this blog. One year....much have been gained through this blog. Personally, some of the objectives that I have set one year ago have been achieved yet some were still far.

Using the medium of this virtual world as the way of me expressing on everything, be it personal matter, be it my opinion towards the globe....I personally believed there exist lots of room for me to improve on.

Lacking the ability to compose beautiful and wonderful writing in both English and Malay, I have still lots of things to do. The blog is only a tool. If you are able to use the tool wisely, you would be able to achieve something that is far greater than what have you been imagining previously.

One year being a blog writer, I have gained deeper understanding on the languange of HTML. Up till today, I have created at least two separate designs for this blog. One was green in colour and the existing template is rather blue in its background. Yet, my knowledge is still too small to be proud of. The existing template is not stable for non Win-XP viewing. Not to mention differences across different browsers such as IE or Mozilla. Yearning to be able to construct a template that is hopefully stable across different platforms.

One year gone. Looking at the web statistics of this blog, it does startled me a bit. To know there were more than 4000 real visits throughout a year and out of that, the visitors spanned across the entire world. Ireland, United Kingdom, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and USA and few more countries. At least some of the visitors were my friends but the rest of them, I wonder who are they. Would be glad to know them too. At least, I could expand my friendship. Hopefully they will leave their comment at the Haloscan or at the tagboard on the right ;)

Current statistics of the blog.

The original name of this blog is paradigmshift and the original url is http://hafiz_238.blogspot.com

Paradigmshift as it was called refelcting my effort of continuously moving towards positive change in the coming future. A year now, I guess some of those fundamental that was part of me have changed completely and some yet to be changed.

Enough writing for today. Off to study. Neuroscience, here I come :)

111

This is my 111th post published on this blog. Within less than a year, I managed to come up to this stage. 111 post written is not an easy task to do. Complemented with arduous life as a medical student. Nevertheless, some people can easily outbeaten me. They can easily wrote post daily without any difficulty at all.

111 posts...erm, that seems a lot. This blog managed to see me writing in two languages yet the literature of those two languanges is never my mastery. Some posts were rather personal and some were rather general and less specific.

Reminiscing the past, many things and events have occured between the first post up to this 111th post. Many significant and insignificant matter have changed my perception towards somebody or towards human overall. Changes are sometimes inevitable.

wishing for the past to change for better, that will never happens and that is also a useless thing to do. Must be brave to endure the unpredictable future and never easily giving up despite thorns and prickers along the path.

Hopefully, this blog will see the 1000th post later. Till then, wait and see :D

Latest hits history for my blog. It seems that my blog have many visitors from these 6 countries, Australia, Malaysia, USA, United Kingdom, Ireland and Japan.
